Kellan Lutz, Twilight, and Chapel

I've got to admit, I'm not a huge fan of the hit movie series Twilight.  I guess I'm part of the 3% of people who don't know what it is.  But if you are one of those middle schoolers who love this series, than you'll enjoy this interview with Kellan Lutz.  At the end of the interview he talks about Royal Family Kids Camp as the charity that he is involved with.

For the months of January, February, and March, our chapel offerings will be going to Royal Family Kid's Camp.  RFKC, founded right here in Southern California, is now led by Glenn and Robin Garvin.  Robin also leads the winter kids camp on Feb 13-15th up at Pinecrest for 3rd - 6th graders.  Robin & Friends will be here for a special chapel focusing on RFKC on Friday, March 12th.

See you there!

A Note from Ms. Gaskin

I hope that everyone at school is well. I wanted to thank you and the staff for your prayers -- they have been greatly appreciated. Thankfully, I am no longer sick and we have a new place to live. We're not finished unpacking yet and are still readjusting to life in Toronto.
So much has changed! I hardly recognize places and have forgotten alot of street names. It has been a blessing to be close to family and God has sent and orchestrated so many people to help us as we get risituated- He's truly amazing!

God has been good though- even though it initially snowed during the first week of November, we have had an uncharacteristically mild weathered November. I'm hoping that most of the winter will be like this, but I'm going to have to be prepared if the weather suddenly changes.

I hope everything is going well at school and please say hello to the staff and students for me. I think of the kids often.

Also I hope that you have a Happy Thanksgiving as well next week.

God bless,

Sarah Gaskin

Chapel - From Coach Jer

For Middle School Parents (5th - 8th)

If your student hasn't shared with you yet, we had a powerful chapel service this morning. Our theme this month is COOPERATION.  Our conversation this morning centered around this idea and how we might be a part of God's work in the world.

Our medium for this discussion was a film called Invisible Children. If you haven't heard of it, it's a moving story of actual events that are happening in Uganda/Sudan. Many many men and women are suffering from the constant war but children especially are being hurt as a result of what happening.

This movie is an honest look at the world - what people are going through, feeling, and experiencing, etc. In this way, the movie is raw and sometimes graphic, although appropriate. The movie has amazing potential to open the eyes of our youth to the world around them - across the world and across the room.

I would encourage further processing and discussion. As a class we've had conversations and times of prayer already but there may be and probably is more on your children's hearts related to this issue. Ultimately, we centered upon the hope of cooperating with God's work especially as it relates to the relieving of suffering and pain in the world. We earnestly prayed for hope, peace, and restoration of all the brokeness. We also talked about being with people amidst their pain when we are unable to rescue them.

A question we have wrestled with before this chapel but didn't touch on this morning was the problem of pain. The reality of both a Sovereign God and immense pain in the world is worth our processing, attention, wrestling and questions.

God bless you and your families as we walk together during this season and time. May God give you rich conversation and beautiful connection.

With Him,

Coach Jer

Final Flag Football Game -- R U Ready Dads?

We've decided to end the flag football season with one final game.

Tuesday, December 1st at 3:30 PM, we will be having the OLD MAN vs PVCS game.  Yes, that's right.  All you dads, uncles, grandpas of kids on the team, pull out your old jersey's and cleats.  It's time to show 'em youngsters we still got it, just like back in the day.

We'll end the evening with a fun time of pizza back at the school.

See you then!

Chapel - Invisible Children

Today, we had split chapels!  The PK - 4th met with Mr. Miller in the Kidzone Room.  Ask your child why we had a house in there!

The 5th - 8th graders met with Coach Jeremy in the sanctuary, with Pastor Tom and Pastor Charlie leading worship.  The group watched and discussed a short movie called Invisible Children.  This movie looks at what a typical middle schooler's life looks like in war torn Uganda.

While the movie has much less graphic violence than the majority of video games and movies the students talk about on a regular basis, the difference is that this is based in reality.  Undoubtedly, your student may ask you some questions.  We believe that you as a parent are the best ones to answer these questions.

As this week of Thanksgiving approaches, we must remember to give thanks that we are blessed to live in the United States.  It is then also our responsibility to pray for those around the world who are not as fortunate as us.

To find out more about the Invisible Children Project, you may view this website.

To learn more about Social Justice issues that affect us globally, I would also recommend the PCPJ Project, led by Dr. Paul Alexander, Professor of Theology and Ethics at Azusa Pacific University and his latest book, Peace to War: Shifting Allegiances in the Assemblies of God.

And finally, Pastor Charlie is continuing to collect pringles cans of change to help stop human trafficking.  For more information about what you can do, visit Project Rescue

Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Football Game Cancelled

Congratulations to a great Football season this year.  Coach Jeremy and all the parents who helped deserve a great big Hurrah!.

The league officials have determined that last Friday's game ended in a tie.  Since we had previously lost to Norwalk, the league has advanced Norwalk to the final championship game.  There will be no more football games this year.

While I am disapointed in their decision, I am extremely proud of all of you.  Thanks for a great season.

Happy Birthday Deanna Dang

Happy Birthday!

Veterans Day Thank you.

Veteran's Day has become just another holiday, the import of which escapes most Americans today.

What was so important about the 11th month, the 11th day, the 11th hour?  Why do people still wear poppies on this day?  What is important about Flander's Field?

To learn more about Veterans Day, click here.

And again,  Thank you to all of our veterans!

Weekly Letter - Veterans Day

Thank a Veteran!

While having school on Veterans Day is somewhat unusual now, it gave us an opportunity to thank our veterans and active service personnel. If you have a friend or relative currently serving in the Armed Forces, please let us know, so we can put them on our prayer wall.

Float Theme!

After a 2 hour meeting a Marie Callendar's this past Saturday, we have decided what the float will be!

Palm View is Going Green and showing Committment to Cleaning the Community!

Our float will consist of a school scene, complete with Christmas Tree and Chalkboard, with new trash cans sitting at desks and learning what it means to recycle.  Students not on the float will be either additional recycle cans or workers picking up trash in orange vests.

Pre-schoolers and Kindergartners who wish to take their wagons and make trash trucks, street sweepers, etc, are encouraged to do so, so they don't have to walk.

There will be two bell ringing groups this year dressed as sanitation engineers.

The goal is to make as much of the float as possible with recycled materials, so

WE NEED THE FOLLOWING ITEMS
  • Clean aluminum cans and bottles
  • Cardboard/ Plastic Egg Crates
  • Cardboard boxes

Got Bling?

Got extra bling and want some dough for Christmas?

Listen for details!

Preschool Announcement

As many of you know, we had reassigned Mrs. Johnson to the preschool division from the elementary division last week. During this past week she has been performing administrative and other duties at my request. Mrs. Johnson has been part of our preschool transition team since the summer as we’ve created a new learning environment. Many of you may remember her from the Open House held in August. Mrs. Johnson brings considerable experience in the education field. She is completing a master’s degree and is a licensed pre-school director. She has worked alongside Mrs. Sifuentes for several years.

Ms. Stella Bazaure has been a faithful employee of Palm View for many years. She has opted to accept a severance package instead of taking a reassignment which we offered, while we await the growth of the preschool. We wish her well in her future endeavors.

Ms. Stella will be opening the preschool next Monday and Tuesday in order to say goodbye to many of the parents she has grown to know over the years. I encourage parents of students she has formerly taught to drop her a note. On Tuesday, the staff will be having a farewell luncheon for her.

Media Impact on Middle Schoolers

As teachers, we often hear students complain that an hour or two of homework each night is too much.  Yet we find it amazing that most students have spent multiple hours watching tv, playing video games, texting, and internet surfing.

What kind of impact does this have on our children's self esteem, world view, and future careers?

On Monday, November 16th, we have invited CJ Hiltz to give a special presentation to our 5th - 8th graders.  Parents are welcome to attend this 1 PM talk on the impact of media in our lives.

For more information, visit MediaTalk and watch the video.
