Chapel - From Coach Jer
If your student hasn't shared with you yet, we had a powerful chapel service this morning. Our theme this month is COOPERATION. Our conversation this morning centered around this idea and how we might be a part of God's work in the world.
Our medium for this discussion was a film called Invisible Children. If you haven't heard of it, it's a moving story of actual events that are happening in Uganda/Sudan. Many many men and women are suffering from the constant war but children especially are being hurt as a result of what happening.
This movie is an honest look at the world - what people are going through, feeling, and experiencing, etc. In this way, the movie is raw and sometimes graphic, although appropriate. The movie has amazing potential to open the eyes of our youth to the world around them - across the world and across the room.
I would encourage further processing and discussion. As a class we've had conversations and times of prayer already but there may be and probably is more on your children's hearts related to this issue. Ultimately, we centered upon the hope of cooperating with God's work especially as it relates to the relieving of suffering and pain in the world. We earnestly prayed for hope, peace, and restoration of all the brokeness. We also talked about being with people amidst their pain when we are unable to rescue them.
A question we have wrestled with before this chapel but didn't touch on this morning was the problem of pain. The reality of both a Sovereign God and immense pain in the world is worth our processing, attention, wrestling and questions.
God bless you and your families as we walk together during this season and time. May God give you rich conversation and beautiful connection.
With Him,
Coach Jer
Final Flag Football Game -- R U Ready Dads?
Tuesday, December 1st at 3:30 PM, we will be having the OLD MAN vs PVCS game. Yes, that's right. All you dads, uncles, grandpas of kids on the team, pull out your old jersey's and cleats. It's time to show 'em youngsters we still got it, just like back in the day.
We'll end the evening with a fun time of pizza back at the school.
See you then!

Chapel - Invisible Children
The 5th - 8th graders met with Coach Jeremy in the sanctuary, with Pastor Tom and Pastor Charlie leading worship. The group watched and discussed a short movie called Invisible Children. This movie looks at what a typical middle schooler's life looks like in war torn Uganda.
While the movie has much less graphic violence than the majority of video games and movies the students talk about on a regular basis, the difference is that this is based in reality. Undoubtedly, your student may ask you some questions. We believe that you as a parent are the best ones to answer these questions.
As this week of Thanksgiving approaches, we must remember to give thanks that we are blessed to live in the United States. It is then also our responsibility to pray for those around the world who are not as fortunate as us.
To find out more about the Invisible Children Project, you may view this website.
To learn more about Social Justice issues that affect us globally, I would also recommend the PCPJ Project, led by Dr. Paul Alexander, Professor of Theology and Ethics at Azusa Pacific University and his latest book, Peace to War: Shifting Allegiances in the Assemblies of God.
And finally, Pastor Charlie is continuing to collect pringles cans of change to help stop human trafficking. For more information about what you can do, visit Project Rescue.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Football Game Cancelled
The league officials have determined that last Friday's game ended in a tie. Since we had previously lost to Norwalk, the league has advanced Norwalk to the final championship game. There will be no more football games this year.
While I am disapointed in their decision, I am extremely proud of all of you. Thanks for a great season.

Float Theme!
After a 2 hour meeting a Marie Callendar's this past Saturday, we have decided what the float will be!Our float will consist of a school scene, complete with Christmas Tree and Chalkboard, with new trash cans sitting at desks and learning what it means to recycle. Students not on the float will be either additional recycle cans or workers picking up trash in orange vests.
Pre-schoolers and Kindergartners who wish to take their wagons and make trash trucks, street sweepers, etc, are encouraged to do so, so they don't have to walk.
There will be two bell ringing groups this year dressed as sanitation engineers.
The goal is to make as much of the float as possible with recycled materials, so
WE NEED THE FOLLOWING ITEMS

Preschool Announcement
Ms. Stella Bazaure has been a faithful employee of Palm View for many years. She has opted to accept a severance package instead of taking a reassignment which we offered, while we await the growth of the preschool. We wish her well in her future endeavors.
Ms. Stella will be opening the preschool next Monday and Tuesday in order to say goodbye to many of the parents she has grown to know over the years. I encourage parents of students she has formerly taught to drop her a note. On Tuesday, the staff will be having a farewell luncheon for her.

Don’t forget Saturday, October 31st! We need bulk candy donations. If you can bring 1 bag in next week, it would help out the event a lot.
Sad News
We are saddened to announce that Ms. Gaskin will be leaving our Palm View family. Due to several major family health issues, she will be returning to Canada next week. Her last day will be this Friday. Ms. Gaskin has been a valuable part of the Palm View family for 6 years. She will be missed.
The church and school boards met in a combined session last night. The end result of their decisions was to reassign Ms. Loyko to the middle school position vacated by Ms. Gaskin and to recombine the 3rd and 4th grades with Mrs. Johnson.
I will hold a special meeting with the 3rd & 4th grade parents tomorrow, Thursday, at 6:30 PM.
And the winner is....
Yes, it was the Dodger Dog eating contest between 8th grade Dodgers: Jessica and Rudy; the lone Yankee : Steven, and the Angelic contingent: Christian, Michael, and Jospeh.
To the tune of Hot Diggety Dog, it became a 3 way race among Jessica, Steven and Rudy. The Dodgers pulled it out over the Yankees as Steven gulped down his Dodger dog.
This was one of the more unusual offeretories we've had in chapel, but many kids brough toiletry items and monies for First Day Whitter as part of our KNOCK IT OUT OF THE PARK campaign. We will continue collecting items and donations through out Thanksgiving. Don't forget to join us for Game 4 of the series on November 1st in the fellowship hall.
Thank you for participating.

WEATHER FUN - FOOTBALL NEWS
It has been great weather lately unfortunately it has interfered with our football schedule. Our game was cancelled on Tuesday and we haven't heard yet when or if there will be a make-up game.
We haven't practiced in some time and so tomorrow the 15th we'll practice after school until 4:30p. Please make every effort to be there.
We once again invite any interested students to join the team and tomorrow's practice would be a great way to begin.
If you have any questions or ways to help the team, contact the office.
Looking forward to our next time together.
COACH JER
p.s. Parents - if any of you would like to bring drinks (preferable with small amounts of sugar) for the game you are more than welcome.

Conceptual Frameworks and Your Student (redux)
Here's last years article. Enjoy:
Conceptual Frameworks and Your Student
In my years of experience as a HR professional, I often had the opportunities to take new employees and direct them into positions that best fit what they had learned and could achieve. The critical difference between employees I interviewed for lead or managerial positions and line worker positions were their critical thinking skills and conceptual frameworks.
In my years studying educational theory since then, we've recognized that how we teach our students from the earliest age affects how they think and the job opportunities they will be presented. An article in the current issue [Summer 2008] of The Kappan (the national educational journal of PDK) examined the discrepancies between high school success and collegiate success. Much of it came down to conceptual frameworks and critical thinking skills.
As educators we are committed to best practices within a Christian worldview. Our recent changes in curriculum are in pursuit of this goal.
Another recent study with pre-schoolers supported this idea. Its critique can also apply to elementary educators. That article continues below:
Too often we give our children answers to remember rather than problems to solve. Roger Lewin in
Early Developments (Summer 2008), reported on a wide range of findings coming out of the National Center for Early Development and Learning Multi-State Study of Pre-Kindergarten (NCEDL). One analysis of the findings focused on the usefulness of process versus structural measures in evaluating quality. Here is what was found..."Using data from the NCEDL study, researchers compared the benefits of policies that defined the quality of pre-kindergarten programs by either structural or process features.... Structural features included characteristics such as class size, teacher:child ratios, and levels of teacher education. Process features were defined as 'observable social and instructional interactions that children experience directly with teachers in the classroom.'"They found that none of the recommended minimum standards of structural quality were directly related to children's development of receptive language (words they understood), expressive language (words they were able to use), rhyming, problem solving, letter naming, or behavior. Yet each dimension of process quality examined was associated with at least one area of development. Children learned best when teachers' interactions promoted conceptual development and offered feedback on children's learning. Children showed considerably larger gains in language and social development when they experienced higher quality instruction or more responsive and sensitive interactions with the teacher."These findings suggest that state-funded pre-kindergarten programs and policies should not rely on structural features alone to promote development. High quality interactions between teachers and children are the active ingredient through which pre-K programs foster the academic, language, and social competencies of children. In fact, the evidence suggests that when state policy only focuses on structural features, pre-kindergarten programs may fall short of their potential for facilitating children's development."
