Once every 2 years our upper grade students participate in the National Mock Election, which is scheduled this year for October 30th. As part of our political science core this year we have invited several speakers from both parties to address the political and governmental processes to our 5th - 8th graders. During this time, we will also hold student government elections.
This Thursday, at 10 AM, we will welcome Mrs. Jan Baird, who recently returned from Denver as a California delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Mrs. Baird blogged in the Whittier Daily News every day regarding her experience. She also serves as a local public school board representative and her husband serves on the Whittier Unified High School District board. If possible, her son Robert Baird will also present. He works in Sacramento as a legislative aide to Assemblyman Tony Mendoza from California's 56th District.
Mrs. Diane Lenning has also agreed to speak in several weeks. Mrs. Lenning is the Republican candidate for the 39th Congressional District. She is a retired teacher who taught at Santa Fe Springs High School and at the old Fred C. Nelles site.
Parents are welcome to attend these educational and informative sessions.
