Youth Music Outreach

Congratulations for another successful semester of music to the following students:

Alison Echavarri
Megan Tutorow
Nicholas Garibay
Marissa Miller

The final end of the year performance at East Whittier Methodist Church on Saturday night was excellent.  It was exciting to see how far our beginning band students have come and what they have to look forward to as concert wind ensemble and jazz ensembles brought down the house!

While Palm View is closing, YMO has been part of the Whittier area for over 12 years.  It is the only youth music orchestra in the area.  I encourage our students to remain a part of the program as long as they can.

To find out more about YMO, please visit their website at http://www.youthmusicoutreach.com/.

Rio Hondo & Natalie

Natalie & the Rio Hondy Symphony Violin

The entire K-8th Grade enjoyed Wendy Velasco, cellist from the Rio Hondo Symphony as she demonstrated different string instruments at Palm View.

Playing a little Haydn and some Brahms, she illustrated the difference between classical and romantic music.

Having some fun with the teachers and students, she played theme songs from current movies.  Even though the teachers had first chance to guess the movie, they still lost 5 to 1.  Thanks Coach Jer!  Otherwise we would have been blanked!

If any student still has a question regarding string instruments, please ask your parents to help you click on this link and email our guest, Wendy Velasco.

On Thursday, our adventure continues as we discover brass instruments!

Fred C Nelles Update

State chooses Brookfield Homes to develop Nelles site in Whittier

By Mike Sprague, Staff Writer  Posted: 05/19/2010 04:21:01 PM PDT

Shown is an aerial view of the now-closed Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility. (Photo courtesy state Department of General Services)WHITTIER - The state has chosen Brookfield Homes, a national home developer locally based in Costa Mesa, to develop the 73.8-acre now-closed Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility.

Negotiations between Brookfield and the state still must be completed before a final deal would go to the state Public Works Board for approval, said Eric Lamoureux, spokesman for the state Department of General Services.

"They were the ones who had the best offer for the property," Lamoureux said.

Neither the company nor Lamoureux were willing to provide details about the offer.

The property has been vacant since 2004, when the state closed the 113-year-old prison.

The state earlier this year had selected the development team of Lewis Operating Group of Upland and Shapell Homes of Beverly Hills to develop the property, but negotiations fell apart. Officials from the state and the developers declined to talk about what happened.

Brookfield Homes once partnered with other companies and the city to develop the Nelles site. However, the deal never went through.

"We're hopeful this time that it will end in a purchase and development of the property," said Adrian Foley, president of the Southland division of Brookfield.

The final deal is expected to include a significant downpayment with the final sums coming when the city has approved a project, Foley said.

"We've very excited," Foley said. "It's in a wonderful city and location."

Foley said he expects their proposal for the site to be some kind of mixed-use development of residential, commercial and office space.

Whittier City Council members have said they favor a development alternative calling for 45 percent residential, 35 percent commercial and 20 percent other uses, such as medical offices.

Foley said he is aware of the city's expectations and expects that formula to be used as a base to develop a plan.

Jeff Collier, director of community development, said he's happy that the process is now moving forward. "We want to see the deal consummated so we can see this site put back into productivity," Collier said.

Once Brookfield and the state reach a final deal, the city will begin working with the developer on a plan for the property.

"Once we get that plan, we can kick off the environmental impact report process," Collier said.

He said it could take about a year to 18 months from when the city gets a plan until the Planning Commission would hold hearings.

Brookfield Homes is a publicly traded company with $1 billion in assets that builds about 800 homes a year nationally.

The company also builds about 350 homes annually in the Southern California area, Foley said.

"We are building in Irvine, Anaheim, Ontario, Long Beach and Santa Clarita," he said.

Talent Show & Campout - This Friday! - May 14th!

Santa Fe Springs Christian School Meeting

The meeting for all interested parents who desire to attend Santa Fe Springs Christian School will be held on Thursday afternoon at 5 PM at the Santa Fe Springs location.

As you recall, an anonymous donor has offered to cover the costs of the 10% discount offered to Palm View students and their families.  For more information, you may contact Richard Brown, principal of Santa Fe Springs Christian, or Sean Landeros.

Field Day is Coming Up - May 28th!

Santa Fe Springs Christian Schools has blessed Palm View Parents

As many of you know, I am only endorsing accredited ACSI K8 schools - Whittier Christian, Santa Fe Springs Christian, and Montebello Christian are the only three schools in this region that meets those requirements.   These schools have proved their financial stability through independent auditing practices as a component of accreditation.

Richard Brown, principal of Santa Fe Springs Christian and a long time friend contacted me this afternoon.  An anonymous donor has agreed to cover the costs of a 10% discount on all current Palm View students to enroll at Santa Fe Springs for the Fall. God is good!

There will be several stipulations to this offer -- first, families accounts at Palm View must be in good standing.  Second, a minimum of ten students must choose to enroll.  Most likely, the offer will be such so that after 9 payments are made the final month installment is free.  The details of this offer will be presented at a meeting this Thursday night at the Santa Fe Springs campus just off the 605 / 5 interchange at Florence Avenue.  Please contact Sean Landeros tomorrow (Wednesday) after school for more information.

My thanks goes out to both Richard Brown of Santa Fe Springs and Mike Ely of Whittier Christian for making quality Christian education available to our Palm View families.

Whittier Christian Schools

Dear parents:

Now that Pastor Tom and the the combined school and church board have issued their final decision about the school year, I am able to announce that Whittier Christian Schools and their superintendent Mike Ely have been very gracious and helpful in our time of transition.

All 1st - 7th grade parents who wish to enroll at Whittier Christian are eligible for a special offer which ends on May 30th.  Up to a $800 discount will be given per child.  All parents who still believe this is unaffordable for them can also apply for financial aid.  It is my belief that a quality affordable education can still be made available to our families.

Whittier Christian is the only ACSI accredited K8 school remaining in Whittier and is the closest to sharing my personnel core values and direction of Christian education.  As part of ACSI accreditation, financial records are regularly reviewed for continued viability and sustainability.  A school improvement plan is also in place.  For those of you interested in learning more about them and the special offer they are making only for current Palm View students, you may do one of three things:

1) Visit the Jr. High Open house tonight (May 7th at 7 PM).
2) Join me in visiting the special Palm View only open house on Monday, May 10th at 7 PM.  This open house will be geared to questions that our Palm View family will have at Whittier Christian's Newlin campus.
3) Pick up one of Whittier Christian's brochures available at the Palm View School office.

Of course there are two other quality ACSI accredited K8 schools in our regional area:

Feel free to connect with Richard Brown (Santa Fe Springs)  or Ernie Castro (Montebello).

Thank you for allowing me to serve you these past number of years,

Sincerely,

Marvin J. Miller
Principal, Palm View Christian School.

Letter from Pastor Tom

This letter is an important message from Pastor Tom:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May 7, 2010

Dear Parents,

Last night the School & Church Boards met to make a final decision about the 2010-11 school year here at Palm View Christian School.  It is with sad and heavy hearts that we made a unanimous decision that, due to low enrollment, we will be unable to provide 1st grade through 7th grade for next school year.

However, the following classes will be provided at our school:

*Preschool (Mrs. Gloria Sifuentes and staff)
*Kindergarten (Mrs. Sara Santos)
*8th grade (Mrs. Centmeyer)

We want to thank all the parents who made efforts to register for next year.  That being said, let me share the following information that you need to be aware of:

1) During the last week the enrollment numbers for next year went from 62 students to 57 students.
2) On Monday, May 10, we will begin the process of returning your registration fees to you.
3) Parents must pay their tuition in a timely manner!  The board set policy last night that states:

If a parent does not pay their student's April 30th tuition, by Friday, May 14th at 3:30 PM, the student will not be allowed back into class on Monday, May 17, until payment is received.

4) Let's all agree to finish this school year in a way that is pleasing to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Sincerely,

Pastor Tom, and the School and Church Boards.

Don't forget to invite a special lady tomorrow!  It's Muffins with Mom!  From 7 to 8:30 AM, stop by for breakfast.  If mom can't make it, invite aunt, tia, grammy, or someone else special in your life!

Goodbye Pastor Tom

As many of you may have now heard, Pastor Tom and Debby announced that at the end of the school year, they will be resigning the church and relocating to Springfiled, Missouri.  Their last service will be Graduation Sunday, June 13th.

For the past six years, we have had the pleasure to serve with them in the church and school.  Our very first Sunday at Palm View was the Sunday he was voted in as pastor.  Our last, just as his, will be the 8th grade graduation of 2010.  God has larger plans than all of us know.

While this came as a surprise to me, both Teresa and I wish him well in this new transition.  As we prepare for our move to Kansas at the end June, we understand what it means to go in a new direction and to walk in faith.

We continue to pray for Palm View and all our students -- past, present, and even future.

Mr. Miller
