What School?

I have been hearing this question a lot lately..  What school should I go to?

FIRST, how about Palm View?  A number of parents are still excited about the potential for Palm View continuing next year under new leadership.  I have been speaking to prospective parents at Stater Brothers, Harris GMC (Yes, they are still open too!) and around the community.  Ask your friends to register before May 4th, and to your part -- pay your bill on time!

SECOND, if not Palm View, then who?

First, if you value a quality Christian education with the same high teacher quality and academic standards, there are only a handful of choices in the area.  Second, the one thing that most parents overlook is the sustainability and viability of a Christian school when they make their choice.  Just as one of the group of parents that used to be part of Brethren.  Third, no one takes a look at the national trends and other tell-tale signs that a school might be in danger of closing.  Vance Nichols, a long time ACSI administrator has been doing research on this for several years.

The current trends indicate that church sponsored schools under 120 students in the US are rapidly closing.  Schools are 100 are in imminent danger of closing.  The thought many schools have is to outlast the other -- but that usually only keeps them open 1 year longer.  That is why we attempted a quality merger with another school in order to keep affordable Christian education in Whittier for the long term.

We have negotiated deep discounts, additional financial aid, and potential jobs for our teachers at one of the three local Christian schools whom I beleive will still be here for the next ten years.  That will be publically announced on Wednesday, pending the outcome of the May 4th board meeting.

If you would like more information, please contact me directly.

Thank you.

20% left....

Yep, there is still 20% of the school year left! -- No slackin'!

Spring-itis is easy to catch, especially during a time of transition; but as Shrek says, it ain't ogre until it's ogre...

Our teachers are committed to providing instructional time all the way up to the last day of the year.  We are welcoming Dr. Claire Sibold from Biola University for several days of instruction on how to improve the teaching of writing to our students.

We have booked artists with the Rio Hondo Symphony for additional music enrichment.

A number of guest chapel speakers are still on the schedule.

We are reminding all our students that there is still plenty of homework, quizzes, and tests to be taken.  Don't get lazy!  The year isn't over yet!

Shakey's Fundraiser - Teacher Appreciation

Goodbye Whittier

Dear Palm View Family:

Last week’s announcement that our beloved school was closing after 25 years was one of the most difficult and emotional days of my life. As many of you know, once I realized that there was no way for me to figure out how to keep the school afloat during this economic period, I turned in my resignation, still hoping against hope that something would work out, and with no real idea what my family would do next. I thank the board for extending the timeline this week in order for new families to enroll.

As some of you have heard by now, I was called after the meeting on Monday and offered another position at Bethel Life Christian School in Wichita, KS. During the course of this week, we have decided to accept that offer. My wife and I will be introduced to their congregation on Sunday morning, May 2nd.  In the evening, we will be introduced to the city of Wichita at the 10,000 seat Intrust Arena where I will share my vision of what quality Christian education can be during the schools annual fundraiser. Much of that vision has come to be reality over the last five years I’ve been involved at Palm View. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives. I don’t think many people realize the quality and caliber of the faculty we have had over the years. My hats are off to them for doing such an innovative and creative job with few resources.

As the school year winds down and as I enter this transition period, my focus will be on final celebrations of our graduates. Our team will continue quality instruction through the very end of the year. Please continue to pay your tuition bills on time in order that we can pay their salaries.

I have enjoyed our friendships, and covet your prayers. The one thing I have been constantly reminded during this time is simply this – The Lord prepares a path for those that seek Him. Walk in His ways and you will never go wrong.

To those that have known us during our 23 years in Whittier, we will announce a date for a final going a party sometime in June. We would welcome your presence!

FREE Wheelchair Mission

On Wednesday last week, we welcomed Mike Kenyon from Free Wheelchair Mission as our speaker. He presented a high quality, durable wheelchair constructed from a simple plastic lawn chair that is given away in impoverished countries. Many wheelchairs have been recently shipped to Haiti to help the victims of the recent earthquake.

Each wheelchair only costs $59.20. Our chapel offerings for the rest of the year will be going to support this important ministry which helps people function in their daily lives.

I have issued a challenge. If by the the night of the talent show, (Friday, May 14th) enough monies have been raised to purchase at least 10 chairs, I will have my legs shaved. If enough comes in to purchase 20 (nearly $1200), then I will have my head shaved bald.

In order to help motivate the students towards this goal, the remaining Fridays of the school year will be $1 free dress days. Please continue to bring offerings for chapel for the rest of the year. No other class room fundraising will be used for this.
